Packing List -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. INSTALLATION The Compaq PCMCIA Support Diskette contains drivers and utilities that enable you to use PCMCIA standard PC cards (or "PC Cards") in Compaq computers that feature PC Card slots. To install the PCMCIA drivers and utilities, 1. Insert the diskette in drive A. 2. At the drive A system prompt, type INSTALL This creates the directory \CPQDOS on drive C:, and copies the PCMCIA driver files into that directory. If Windows is installed on the computer, the Windows PCMCIA files are copied into the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. 3. INSTALL will add the following lines to your CONFIG.SYS file: DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=D000-DFFF DOS=HIGH DOS=UMB REM *** Begin PCMCIA Drivers REM Warning: Do not move, re-order, or delete any of these lines. REM DEVICE=C:\CPQDOS\PCMSMIX.EXE (Not installed on Concerto) DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\SSVLSI.EXE (or SSCIRRUS.EXE for Concerto) DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\CS.EXE DEVICE=C:\CPQDOS\CSALLOC.EXE DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\ATADRV.EXE (plus /D:1 parameter for Contura Aero) DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\CARDID.EXE C:\CPQDOS\CARDID.INI DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\MEMDRV.EXE ;DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\DBLFLASH.EXE ;DEVICEHIGH=C:\CPQDOS\MS-FLASH.SYS REM *** End PCMCIA Drivers NOTE: By default, the Microsoft Flash File System (DBLFLASH.EXE and MS-FLASH.SYS) is disabled. Only enable the Flash File System if you plan to use flash memory cards. Enable the drivers by editing the CONFIG.SYS file and removing the semicolon (;) from the front of the DEVICEHIGH lines. When adding EMM386.EXE, INSTALL excludes memory range D000-DFFF. This reserves a 64K region in upper memory for PC Cards. 4. If Windows is installed, INSTALL modifies the SYSTEM.INI file in the following manner: [boot] Changes: comm.drv=comm.drv To: comm.drv=sscomm.drv Changes: drivers=mmsystem.dll [Other Drivers] To: drivers=sswincs.dll mmsystem.dll [Other Drivers] [386Enh] Adds: device=cs.386 Changes: device=*vcd To: device=csvcd.386 Adds: COM1Base=3F8 COM1Irq=4 COM2Base=2F8 COM2Irq=3 COM3Base=3E8 COM3Irq=4 COM4Base=2E8 COM4Irq=3 EMMEXCLUDE=D000-DFFF 5. Restart your system to activate the drivers. DOS 6 users may run MEMMAKER to optimize memory usage after installing the drivers. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. PCMCIA DOCUMENTATION Information on how to use PC Cards with your computer is available in the following documentation: * Beyond Setup Manual * Compaq Online Users Guide (Available under Windows from the Compaq Learning Center) * The PCMCIA option in the Computer Setup Utility (Available under Windows from the Compaq Control Center) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. TECHNICAL NOTES This section contains advanced technical information and special purpose procedures. It is not necessary to read this information for typical PC Card operation. NOTE 1: Factory Settings NOTE 2: Assigning COM1 to Modem/Fax Cards NOTE 3: Running Windows After Booting from a Static RAM (SRAM) Card >> NOTE 1: Factory Settings The PCMCIA software is configured at the factory as follows. Items marked with an asterisk (*) may be modified by running the Computer Setup utility under Windows, or the PCCARD utility under DOS. DESCRIPTION SETTING The following lists show the possible settings for the card status change IRQ (used to notify the system of PC Card events, such as card insertions and removals) and PC Card IRQs (such as the modem and network card IRQ settings below). Note that when choosing an IRQ from these lists, make sure it does not conflict with any other device in the computer: Concerto: 3,4,5,6,7,9,10 Contura Aero: 3,4,5,6,7,9,10,11,12 LTE Elite: 3,4,5,6,7,9,10,11,12,15 Contura 400: 3,4,5,6,7,9,10,11,12,15 * Card status change IRQ 9 Reserved upper memory space D0000h-DFFFFh * Modem/FAX card COM port 2 * Modem/FAX card IRQ 3 * Modem/FAX card I/O ports 2F8h-2FFh NOTE: The following settings are only used for PCMCIA network cards that do NOT include network drivers that are Card Services clients. Refer to your network card documentation or contact the card manufacturer to determine whether or not the driver is a Card Services client. * Network card IRQ 5 * Network card I/O ports base address 300h * Network memory base address 1 D8000h * Network memory base address 2 DC000h Make sure the network settings match those specified in the network setup program or in the network driver initialization file (e.g., NET.CFG or PROTOCOL.INI). Also make sure the network card IRQ is set to one of the possible IRQ settings for the computer the card is installed on (see list above). >> NOTE 2: Assigning COM1 to Modem/Fax Cards As shown in technical note 1, modem/fax cards are normally assigned to serial port COM2 while the computer's built-in serial port is assigned to COM1. It is possible to change these assignments, however. The following steps show how to swap the COM port assignments so that COM1 is set to the modem/fax card and COM2 is set to the built-in serial port: 1. Run Computer Setup to set the computer's built-in serial port to COM2 (port address 2F8, IRQ 3) or disable it. Refer to the Beyond Setup manual or the Compaq Online User's Guide that came with your computer for information on how on how to run Computer Setup. Ignore any IRQ or I/O conflict warnings that may be displayed. Also, when running Computer Setup from Windows, answer "No" when the computer prompts "Would you like to restart now?". 2. Exit Windows, type PCCARD at the DOS prompt, and press ENTER. When the welcome screen appears, select "OK" to continue. 3. Pull down the "File" menu and select "Edit Configuration". The "Edit Configuration" dialog box appears. 4. Select the "Modem Card Configuration" option. The "Modem Card Configuration" dialog box appears. 5. In the "COM Port Assignment" box, set both Slot 1 and Slot 2 to COM1. This way, the modem/fax card will be assigned to COM1 regardless of which slot it is in. 6. Select "OK" to close the "Modem Card Configuration" dialog box. 7. Select "OK" again to close the "Edit Configuration" dialog box. 8. Select "Save Configuration" from the "File" menu. 9. Select "Exit" from the "File" menu. 10. Reboot the computer. 11. In order to access the PCMCIA modem/fax card, set up your communications program to use COM1. >> NOTE 3: Running Windows After Booting from a Static RAM (SRAM) Card If Windows does not run after booting from a static RAM card, follow these steps: 1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file residing on the SRAM card. 2. Add the NOMOVEXBDA parameter to the EMM386 device line. Example: DEVICE=A:\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=D000-DFFF NOMOVEXBDA 3. Save the CONFIG.SYS changes back to the SRAM card. 4. Reboot the computer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.
